House finch bill has curved culmin-- Cassin's is knife-straight. House finch female face looks plain and dull-- Cassin's has more streaking. Cassin's has white breast with sharply defined dark streaks-- House Finch has blurry lighter streaks. Cassins wings look longer down the tail. Of course the males are easy to tell apart (Cassin's pink with bright head, House is brick red). Had lots of Cassin's in my yard in New Mexico so I got used to comparing them. This is a male Cassin's I digiscoped with a 2 megapixel P&S in 2003.
