While checking on the recent trail clearing at Bill Sadowski Park today, a nice assortment of migrants were observed attracted to the fruiting Viginia creeper vines in the Strangler figs at the trail head. First, I was attracted to the call of a Red-whiskered bubul that was feeding on V. creeper. It moved around the trees behind the nature center.
Birds observed feeding on the Virginia Creeper fruit:
Red-eyed Vireo - 8 (also throughout trail)
Yellow-throated Vireo - 2
Summer Tanager - 1
Veery - 1
N. Oriole - 1
N. Mockingbird - 3
Black-throated Blue Warbler - 5
Other birds observed along the main trail to the canal:
Parula Warbler - 3
Prairie Warbler - 2
Worm-eating Warbler - 1
Magnolia Warbler - 1
American Red-start - 2
N. Waterthrush - 1
Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher - 6
Ovenbird - 4
N. Cardinal - 5
Blue Jay - 4
Ruby-throated Hummingbird - 12 (Numerous at the trail head and along the trail).
In about 2-3 weeks the naturalists staff will begin trail clearing on the nature trail and butterfly - hummingbird garden at Castellow Hammock Park.
