On Friday I found a banded Piping Plover on Crandon Beach. This bird was banded this summer (2011), but under unusual circumstances. A wave washed out a nest at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and after a 3-hour search, the biologist found 3 of the 4 eggs. This chick (and its 2 siblings) was hand-reared at the U of MI Biological Station in Pellston, MI and released in Bliss, MI. Another chick from this brood was recently reported on the west coast of FL.
Rocky, a 6-year-old male that has wintered on Crandon Beach for 4 years, was recently sighted in NC. Perhaps he'll make it a 5-year stretch. Rocky got his name from his clueless breeding behavior -- he tried to incubate rocks the same size and shape as the eggs during his first two nesting seasons.
