The only other English name considered by the AOU for Gallinula galeata was Laughing Moorhen, which refers to the "laughing" call commonly given by New World "moorhens" that is unknown in Old World moorhens.
Prior to the North American check-list committee of the AOU splitting Common Moorhen into two species, the South American check-list committee (SACC) of the AOU voted two years earlier to revert back to Common Gallinule. A surprisingly rambling (and IMHO. pretty irrelevant) proposal for the name change, and comments by the SACC members, is here:
