Just birding for an hour & 1/2 in El Portal. It still makes me so happy to see both female and male cardinals sing outside my home as the mean ol' coopers hawk fly by me a couple of times searching for its prey, whilst the red-bellied woodpecker taps in the old electric pole in my backyard ignoring the curious spot-breasted oriole nervously feasting on the cherry hedges. On my bird feeder I had around 10 ground doves mixed with collar/mourning doves devouring wild bird feed at noon time pushing away their two blue jay buddies aside. Up above I see a flock of yellow-chevroned parrots (3) fly by loudly communicating with each other as the quiet flock (8) white ibis feast on my neighboor's freshly cut grass minding their own business. I suddenly decide to once again make another attempt to see the screech owl's nest at the end of my block, but unfortunately, I don't see them... Bummer! I head to the little river where I get attacked by an angry mockingbird who thinks I'm out to get it's chickies up in a nest (Not!) While at little river I see the cute green-backed heron (yes! Still calling it that. :/) fishing next to the a lonely and noisy moorhen. Walking back to my house I saw the first El Portal vulture of the year a turkey - great for Thanksgiving. Lol.
Laters,
Audrey
