The change of plan (and leader) for today's walk caused some confusion at first, but once everyone was rounded up, we had a group of about 20. While the group assembled, we watched Chimney Swifts from the parking lot. The real birding began with the din of a leaf blower in the background. We detected a few birds anyway, but they were rather uncooperative, including Spot-breasted Oriole and Yellow-throated Vireo seen by some. Then we found a group of Red-eyed Vireos near the restrooms.

Barn Swallows occasionally cruised by overhead, and some Yellow-chevroned Parakeets were heard as we worked our way through the oaks. Some other birds teased us, but we could not spot them, except for the first of a good number of
Black-and-white Warblers. Eventually, crossed Old Cutler and headed up the service road.

Ovenbirds were heard and seen by some. I think everyone eventually got an Ovenbird by the end of the day. The highlight on the service road was the Kentucky Warbler that had been seen earlier. We also heard an Eastern Screech-Owl respond to Paul's owl call. Other birds spotted along the road included Prairie Warbler and I think American Redstart.

We continued on to the canal, adding Hill Myna on the way. Three Osprey soared above the canal. The group got sort of stung out on the way back along the nature trail. We saw a Parula on the way back. The lead group ran into Paul when we returned to the parking lot. He told us about the Swainson's Warbler he'd seen on the nature. We headed back in, catching up with the stragglers, who had seen a Black-throated Blue Warbler. A long search for the Swainson's was unsuccessful, but we did find several Worm-eating Warblers, more Ovenbirds, Black-and-whites, Red-eyed Vireos, and a Yellow-throated Warbler.

Including the Northern Waterthrush that Bob saw before the walk, there were 11 warbler species seen at Matheson today.
