Check out the post by Dee on the black bellied whistling ducks at Wakodahatchee. Better yet; check out the pictures. Easy enough to pick up the thread at the following address.
Be prepared for gnats! You'll earn this sighting!
For strangers to S.Florida; take turnpike to Atlantic blvd in Delray Beach, go east to Jog Road, then north on Jog about 2 miles to Palm Beach County Water Utilities plant which is now cleverly located by a bagel shop. Look for sign "Wakodahatchee". Open seven days sunrise to sunset....and they go by the sun.
The ducks fly about and move from holding pond to pond as they feel crowded by observers. But they have been staying at Wakodahatchee. Also still available are the two baby Great Blues (wont leave the nest) a family of Tri-coloreds with four babies chasing mom/dad up and down the boardwalk, and a swamp full of coots, moorhens, and gallinule chicks, fledglings, and adults. The gallinules are much fun to watch as they edge up the flower stalks on the Alligator Flag to get the seeds. The stalk begins to bend and the new chicks get very nervous as they sink back down into the growth. If you haven't been there for a while, check this out. The Alligator Flag now measures in places about three feet higher than the board walk. Crowds are light, the sun is hot, the gnats are biting, and you feel like a poached snapper when you leave...but hey, it's something to do between career opportunities.
