My son and I kayaked to Indian key today so he could get a little snorkeling and kayaking in before he leaves for school tomorrow. We arrived at the island around noon and I managed to bird most of the island before the rains and lightning forced us to seek shelter at the covered section of the boat dock. It stormed most of the time, but I managed to sneak out for 10-15 minutes between storms to get a few more birds. Interesting note were the quantities of Barn Swallows flying south over and around the island. I estimated 200 that I counted, which was probably a conservative number. Birds recorded are listed below:
Indian Key, Monroe, US-FL
Aug 18, 2011 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM
Protocol: Traveling
0.2 mile(s)
Comments: I traveled to Indian Key by kayak and spent 1 hour birding before storms arrived & then managed about 1/2 hour between storms.
