Yesterday Wendy Leonard, Susan Romero, and I birded the western side of Snake Bight by kayaks. Our target bird was the Greater Flamingo that Larry sighted in his post a few days earlier, but as it would be, no Flamingo for us! We did see large numbers of Roseate Spoonbills (around 500) and other large numbers of waders. The shorebirds are arriving, but not in the numbers like we would see around November. Kayaking this time of year can be a challenge with the heat, storms and bugs, but it's still impressive. With the kayaks, we could get very close without spooking them. Yesterday, most of the storms were over mainland, so the only affect they had was to provide a few hours of shade to an otherwise hot day. The winds were light and variable most of the day, but it picked up on our way back to the marina. It became a headwind, plus with an incoming tide, made for a slow return home. The mosquitoes were not bad....as long as you stayed away from the mangroves (we found that out the hard way).Bird list with selective guesstimates are as follows:
