Philip and I took John Vanderpoel by boat yesterday to the look for the reported American Flamingo. We went up as far as you are allowed to motor up Snake Bight Channel towards the boardwalk at the end of Snake Bight Trail. From this point we scanned shoreline to the north and found the American Flamingo way in the distance. We paddled and poled our way towards the location of the bird. When we got as close as we could with out getting stuck, we stopped and used the scope. This is always a challenge in a boat, but can be done if you nose the boat up onto a mud flat. We did this and were able to see the long neck on the American Flamingo. It was hard to see at first because the bird was doing a lot of preening. Once it stopped doing this, it raised its head to where we got decent views.

There is no easy way to try and see this bird, you can use a kayak but it would be a long kayak ride that you have to do on a rising tide and be out of there before the tide changes. You certainly do not want to get stuck out there, ask David LaPuma what fun that can be!!!

By the way, this was John Vanderpoel's 696 bird for the year!!!
