This morning I went to the Matheson Hammock Trails and ran into Angel and Mariel, at the marked spot where the Thick-billed Vireo was located. Angel and Mariel spotted the Vireo just before I met up with them, around 10:30 am. After about 10 minutes, we relocated it a little deeper into the woods. We got good looks at the bird and Angel took quite a few pictures. The bird was quite active, either preening or feeding, and was constantly moving around. At one point, it came within 8' from us. This allowed excellent looks at a bird that seems to prefer the low, thickly vegetated under-story of the woods. I sure hope Angel got some good photos. A lifer for me, and will duly be toasted this evening by popping a cork to a bottle of fine Lodi Appelation, 7 Deadly Zins, 2008 Old Vine Zinfandel. Salute'!
