Two days ago I noticed a Barred Owl by my bird feeder. First time (that I know of) that a Barred Owl was seen in my yard! He even hung around long enough for me to take pictures. I think he was interested in the squirrels, because I just put some seed out on the feeder. As soon as the owl arrived, 4 Blue-grey Gnatcatchers arrived along with a male Cardinal and a Blue Jay. They came just in time to harass the owl, but he didn't pay too much attention to them. He did show interest in the Cardinal & when the Cardinal moved around, he kept it in his field of view.
Early this morning, the owl was seen on a dead palm trunk right next to the house, checking out the cats on the veranda. Every now and then the owl would do a "head rotation", I assume to zero in on the position of the cats. One cat, in particular, was extremely skittish and even hissed at the owl. My cats stay in all night, mainly because they have a tendency to "disappear" when left out where predators roam.
