Joe Bozzo and I (from Naples) found four Upland Sandpipers at the King Ranch off of US 27 today, August 6th. The Hass's (Least Grebe fame), Bryant Roberts and Carl Edwards saw them as well. We also saw all of the birds everyone else has been seeing. Although the total variety of species isn't overly huge, the quantity of each species is indeed impressive. We saw 7-8 Wilson's Phalaropes, 6 American Avocets, dozens and dozens of Stilt Sandpipers, Pectoral Sandpipers, Leasts, plus several Black-bellied & Semipalmated Plovers, hundreds and hundreds of Roseate Spoonbills, both whistling-ducks and many other shorebirds and waders. One thing that has me perplexed are the dowitchers, some of which are in amazing breeding plumage while others are drab gray. I believe that both Long-billed and Short-billed are present in various places throughout the area. I also saw on eBird that several folks reported Dunlin "out there" and the eBird reviewer accepted these sightings. Isn't this a little early for them? We saw no Dunlin anywhere. Could these birds have been mistaken for Stilt Sandpipers? Anyway, the birds are there and you owe it to yourself to go out to Palm Beach county and see the spectacle for yourself!
