I am a serious birder who does not recklessly list rare birds on my life list, so I am concerned about a sighting I had in southern FL this past weekend. I have been trying to research this tonight and will continue to do so....
What are the chances of seeing a red-cockaded wp in southern Florida? I was in the Key Biscayne/Crandon Park area on Saturday and saw a woodpecker of the appropriate size fly to a tree trunk in a thickly-wooded area, where I then noted the bird's uniform B&W ladder-back pattern (that did NOT have any white patch), and its dark nape. It was not a hairy or downy. Its head was not red which further rules out any other possible woodpecker. What did I see if it was not a red-cockaded?
