I was at a meeting in ENP this past wednesday and I decided to check out some of the areas outside of the park. The two locations worth mentioning are the fields along the west side of 217th between W. Palm Drive (SW 344th St.) and 392nd st. (the road into The Park), and the fields/roadside vegetation along an access road heading north from 392nd st, about midway between the intersection of 392nd and 217th and the C-111 canal (there's a gate, and a sign that says "Youth Camp" at the entrance).

In the fields (spot 1):
White-tailed Kite (2) hunting on both sides of the road
Red-tailed Hawk (1) intermediate phase
N. Harrier (several)

In the agro. fields and in the roadside brush
White-crowned Sparrow (1) (adult eastern race- dark head stripes, bright white intermediary stripes, bright pink bill)
Savannah Sparrow (many)
House Wren (many)
Indigo Bunting (4)
Painted Bunting (2 females)
White-eyed Vireo (2)
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher (several)
Prairie Warbler (several)
Great-crested Flycatcher (1)
Greater Yellowlegs (many)
Killdeer (many)
Sandhill Cranes (2-pairs)
Sharp-shinned Hawk (2)
Short-tailed Hawk (1-dark imm.)
Am. Kestrel (several)

Obviously the coolest thing was seeing the WCSP- and I'm sure this location could be good for many shrub-loving birds this winter....Larry, keep your eyes out!
:o)

cheers
David
