I got out to Markham Park this morning to see what the recent rains had done to the water level
and wading bird numbers since 6/5. Despite the recent rains the water level in WCA 2B has
continued to drop exposing more muddy areas and the number of waders, especially the
medium sized ones as well as Wood Storks, Limpkins, and Black-necked Stilts, has increased.
Birds there today that I didn’t see on 6/5 include Black-crowned-Night Herons, Glossy Ibis, and
Greater Yellowlegs. I wasn’t able to do a complete count but here are the numbers of a few
species that I was able to count, the first number is for 6/5 and the second is for 6/10.

Roseate Spoonbill - 40, 55
Wood Stork - 135, 300
Limpkin - 20, 60
Black-necked Stilt - 2, 32

Later while driving along the Ft. Lauderdale Int. Airport Perimeter Road I saw three Anis, then a
little farther down the road what looked like a dead black bird on the shoulder. I turned around to
see what it was and found the body of an adult Smooth-billed Ani that looked like it had been
dead for a day or two.
