When I lived at Lake Emerald Condominium in Oakland Park (Broward Co.) thousands of gulls roosted on the 180 acre lake during the winter. I estimated at least 25,000 in late January 2004, my last winter there. Most were laughing and ring-billed with at least 3,000 herring. The people who did the CBC at that time told me they only counted the adult LBBG for the survey. It would have been difficult to pick out and count the younger birds in such a large gathering, though there were fewer birds in mid December when the count was done.
Since this is a gated community without public access, perhaps accurate numbers are not possible to obtain at this time. There were also many GBBG, a few Bonapart's, and I once saw a Sabine's Gull on the lake. Quite a unique place to live. I miss it.
