This morning, 06/26, 2011, I decided to head down to the Big Cypress Preserve & Fakahatchee Strand to try to surpass the magical 100 species mark for my June Challenge total for Collier County, which stood at 98 species. I succeeded by adding four new species: Brown-headed Cowbird (Chokoloskee), Common Yellowthroat (Kirby Storter Boardwalk), both Greater & Lesser Yellowlegs standing side-by-side in a sky pool (from the recent rains) one mile east/southeast from the Port-of-the-Islands on US Rte 41 (south side of the highway). That brings my total to 102 species, none of them exotics other than the accepted European Starling, House Sparrow, etc. I also saw a beautiful King Rail on US Rte 41 that had recently been hit by a car unfortunately. That bird would have been #103 for my Collier County June Challenge, but more importantly, #200 for my Collier County Big Year had it been alive. I only know of one or two other species seen in Collier County by others during the month of June -- birds that I have not seen myself. There's still a chance for a few more species before the end of the month. . . .
