I wanted to try and bird the northwest portions of the county, taking Krome up to Okeechobee Rd and then north to Broward, but found Krome still closed past the casino due to wildfires. Instead, I headed out SR41 and birded out to the Collier line, including a quick trip on the limited portion of Loop Rd in Dade.

Water is exceedingly low, and most birds were located by finding standing water. There were plenty of Limpkins (10+) and Purple Gallinules (6), plus one canal that had hundreds of waders, including about 25 Wood Storks. Other highlights were King Rail (heard), a Least Bittern flying across a pond, Eastern Kingbirds, and --my day's contribution to the June Challenge--a Barred Owl that flushed out from the side of the road along Loop Rd.

I also saw at least 6 River Otters, including one that galloped right along the shoulder of 41 about 2-3 miles west of Krome.
