The Marielitos team got off to a decent start today, despite limited time by most of our members. Highlights included 3 warbler species (Yellow, Prairie, Common Yellowthroat), Spot-breasted Oriole, and Red-shouldered and Red-tailed Hawk, but by far our best showing were the shorebirds at Cutler Wetlands. These included Semipalmated Plover, Killdeer, Black-necked Stilt, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, RED KNOT!!, Semipalmated Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, Short-billed Dowitcher, and STILT SANDPIPER. We'll see if we turn up something really unexpected in our efforts.

The June Challenge gives us a new perspective and makes us appreciate birds that we take for granted the rest of the year. It's the only time you'll hear us saying "Glossy Ibis - Yes!", Ring-billed Gull - Yes!", Turkey Vulture - Yes!". Remember, the goal is to make birding in June fun, not to be competitive or anything like that.
