Mystery Plant(?) Mass

My son-in-law photographed this mystery biological feature in his backyard pond the other night. To me, it looks like one of the unrecognizable bio-symbols embedded in the floor at MIA. However, this plant-like structure was real. It was about 3 in. across when photographed, and was was gone the next morning. Can anyone provide a clue as to what it is?
