Nancy Freedman and I had a long but rewarding day of birding in the keys. This is the ninth time that I have done this spring count since I took it over from Mort Cooper in 2002 (skipped 2006). Our total of 1604 individuals was our 2nd highest for this count, as was our total of 69 species.

Highlights included 3 Yellow Warblers near the Card Sound Bridge, Antillean Nighthawk in Tavernier, a record 109 White-crowned Pigeons (everywhere!), 6 Clapper Rails (Crocodile Lake NWR on Card Sound Rd), Roseate Tern (Marathon and Ohio-Missouri Channel), and a Mangrove Cuckoo sitting right above our heads at Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammocks Botanical Park

Unusual birds included Chimney Swift and White-winged Dove on Key Largo, a couple of Common Peafowl at Plantation Key (known location, but not on this count), Solitary Sandpiper on Summerland Key, and Roseate Spoonbill at Tavernier.
