This coming Sunday, May 23, Kathy Malone from the South Florida Water Management District will be escorting birders into Storm Water Treatment Area 5 in Hendry County. This now otherwise off-limits area has produced great numbers of birds, including both whistling ducks (according to Kathy, Black-bellied Whistling Ducks were seen on the most recent tour, with Audubon of the Everglades), plus a wide variety of shorebirds, including Ruffs. While shorebird migration is winding down, who knows what could be found there!
