If one has time and is willing to make the drive, saw three male painted buntings singing their hearts out yesterday afternoon in NE Florida. Apparently, they are there all summer (According to the "Great Florida Birding Trail" Guide). I have only seen them previously at Corkscrew feeders. I have seen females at Fort De Soto.

Fort George Island: North of Jacksonville and the St. John's River, part of the Talbot Islands Park System. Two males were singing in tops of the oaks and brush, about half way along the nature trail (NW of the parking area). Time - maybe 4:00pm

Ft. Clinch State Park: Fernandina Beach (almost to Georgia!!!). One male singing from oak canopy along main park drive. Time - around 6:00 - 6:30pm.

Like I said, each was singing rather loudly. Thus with some perseverance, good ears, and sharp eyes, each was "easy" to spot. Not very shy, but did move around a bit.

Both are beautiful parks and worth the drive. The topography, temperature, and foliage differences are nice to see for someone from West Central Florida (St. Petersburg).

Thanks,
Jim Royle
