After an incredible day of birding in North Key Largo with Joe Barros on the TAS field trip, I made a quick stop at Cutler Wetlands on the way home. A bull rain significantly raised the water level at the wetlands, moving the shorebirds to the two bermed in areas to the north and east. I parked at the corner and much to my surprise, a Whimbrel was seen nearby with several Black-necked Stilts. The Stilts appeared agitated and after a quick call to Trey Mitchell, hoping he could capture a photograph of a species not often seen in Miami-Dade County, one of the Stilts began pecking the Whimbrel, which flew off over the wetlands and towards the Black Point sewage treatment plant.

Other shorebirds in the area were the previously reported Semi-palmated Plovers, Lesser Yellowlegs, and Spotted, Solitary, Semi-palmated and Least Sandpipers. The Whimbrel was both a county bird and year bird. Life is good.......................

Happy Mother's Day!!
