Its root is Greek, Leuko, meaning white. Hence, Leukemia, Leukocyte, etc. In the UK, many of these words have the 'k' changed to a 'c', but pronunciation is still with a "k", not a soft "c".
loo-kiss-tic is the correct pronunciation, not loo-kiss-tic, although our gut instinct is with the soft sound! Gotta love all the exception to English grammar and pronunciation :)
