Purple Swamphens continue to expand their range; this photo was taken about 2 miles west of the Southwest Regional Library on the north side of Sheridan in Pembroke Pines. The property is a private development with a pretty good size mitigation marsh that is about 2-years old. From what I have seen the birds really enjoy these newer marshes, once the vegetation fills in the density of birds go down, this includes native species of duck etc. The area looks great for something like a Masked Duck; I will continue to search for a Masked Duck as I visit relatives in the development. I counted about 3-dozen Purple Swamphens in the area about 2-months ago, I am sure that I may have missed many.
PURPLE SWAMPHEN.
