I understand your skepticism. By googling I was able to come up with a few older records from mid-April but there is very limited data on this species. The early date at Magee Marsh in Ohio is May 5.
The song was around four syllables repeated once (so two times total). Very loud and distinctive.
I didn't have great looks at the bird as it was about 20-30 feet in the forest walking on a log. The bird was large by warbler standards with a full gray hood and white eyering. It had an olive green back and yellow below.
I wish I could provide more evidence but it's the best I can do without photos or a recording. FWIW, I am familiar with the species from its breeding grounds in N. Michigan.
