Having been a good boy, I finished my taxes earlier in the week so I could go birding today. I started out at Sugden Regional Park here in Naples this morning. The ONLY migrant passerine I could find was a Barn Swallow. Only one warbler: Common Yellowthroat. A Brown Thrasher and three Painted Buntings at a nearby residence's feeders were the "best birds" at Sugden. On the other hand, Eagle Lakes Community Park held several migrant shorebirds including Pectoral and Semipalmated Sandpipers. Those pipers were #189 & #190 for my Collier County Big Year attempt. Note: no tape or iPod playback was used to "lure" the shorebirds in for a closer look :) -- That's for you Josh. There possibly was a White-rumped Sandpiper present but it was too far out for me to clinch the ID. Worth checking on. From the gazebo, turn left and go to the intersection with the four ten-foot poles planted in the middle of the walkway. Turn left again. Go about 150 feet past the first bench with the canopy where there is a clearing. The shorebirds are in rather close for the most part. A scope is needed for best results. There was a Solitary Sandpiper there as well and a Wood Duck. Black-necked Stilts, one Semi-palmated Plover, several Killdeer, both yellowlegs plus 8 or more Bronzed Cowbirds were also around. A late afternoon stop at the North Naples Waste Water Treatment Plant produced two lingering Lesser Scaup, plus a dozen or more Blue-winged Teal and many Mottled Ducks with young. The highlight though was 13(!) Wood Ducks including at least four juveniles. I've never seen that many Wood Ducks in one place at one time in Collier County. Also present were several Spotted Sandpipers in full breeding plumage plus many Least Sandpipers, also in breeding plumage . . . .
