9 hopeful birders joined me this morning on the TAS walk at Indian Hammocks Park and MDC Environmental Center.
At Indian Hammocks, migrants were relatively scarce; in fact, the day's theme was "Return Of the Winter Birds". We had seven species of warblers, with the best being an Orange-crowned that gave us fits in trying to get an identifiable look, but obligingly burst into song in response to a tape. Also seen were several Blue-headed Vireos, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned Hawks (thanks, Toe), White-crowned Pigeon, and House Wren, and more singing from the numerous Catbirds.
Most of the group then continued on to the MDC Enviro Center, where we were rewarded with great looks at everyone's FOS Black-whiskered Vireo, and we added 2 more warblers--Northern Waterthrush and Palm. We also had several Painted Buntings, including the first one most of us had ever heard singing in SoFla! The MDCEC is open every second Saturday, and is worth checking out!
