Things were pretty slow this week at Loxahatchee. Our group size was only 8 (down from a high in the 30s). There were very few warblers (Palm, Pine, Common Yellowthroat) and fewer Grebes (i.e., none). We listed most all of the waders but there were very few of each (and no American Bitterns but that might be attributable to a different route we took this week) and there were flyovers of Black-bellied Whistling-Duck, Wood Dock, and Mottled Duck.

We had very good views of a pair of Great Crested Flycatchers high up in the Cypress trees, several dozen Northern Rough-winged Swallows in the air and on the wires, and the slate-gray male Snail Kite and his brown female friend. And we re-found the Sora that went missing last week.

But the best -- by far -- was near the end of the walk when a trio of Swallow-tailed Kites swooped down and performed some aerial acrobatics for us. They landed in the Cypress trees and even looked as if they were carrying nesting material but eventually sailed slowly off to the south. Please excuse the quality of today's photo of one of the Kites -- it is not easy to get a good action photo into the early morning sun. Other photos in the link.
