I spent about two hours from 5-7PM this afternoon at the Picayune Strand State Forest here in Collier County, mainly to document Eastern Bluebirds for the Spring Bluebird Blitz sponsored by the Florida Bluebird Society. I managed to find 3 Eastern Bluebirds but there are undoubtedly more that I didn't see, probably due to the lateness of the day. However, as a bonus, I managed to add another species to my Collier County Big year (CCBY) attempt. I saw one and heard another Northern Bobwhite as I was leaving on Miller Blvd. near the intersection of 60th Avenue SE. That brings my CCBY total to 185. I also saw five woodpecker species including a Hairy Woodpecker (locally uncommon in Collier County), Red-headed Woodpecker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker and Northern Flicker. Red-cockaded and Pileated Woodpeckers occur there too but I didn't see any and I really wasn't specifically looking for them either. Other birds seen: Brown-headed Nuthatch, Pine Warbler, a latish Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Swallow-tailed Kite, Osprey, Red-shouldered Hawk, American Kestrel, Common Ground-Dove, Mourning Dove, Great Crested Flycatcher, Loggerhead Shrike, Blue Jay, Gray Catbird, Northern Mockingbird and Common Grackle.
