Spotted sandpiper now appearing at the canal edge of Hoechoka Hammock. For three years now, one spotted sandpiper has hung around for a month; comes in early March and gone by April 15. The unusual thing is that the steep edges of the SFWMD don't lend themselves well to "sandpiper" habitat.
Also, another unusal occurence is the appearance of about 5 screech owls that vocalize over water at the basin of the canals which measures about 145 feet across. The water seems to amplify their "trilling" as they all call and answer (it seems in different octaves). It is quite charming. Anyone making sound recordings of screech owls might want to check this out.
And last, but not least, two pair of brown thrasher are mated up and nest building but I still haven't located where the nest is.
