I spent a few hours this morning, March 19, 2011 birding Sugden Regional Park here in Naples, Collier Co., FL. Highlights were 10 species of warblers including one of my nemesis warblers for my Collier County Big Year (CCBY) i.e. Yellow-breasted Chat! I previously chased that bird at least four times from other reports around the county and always came up empty handed! It and a Rose-ringed Parakeet (finally) were numbers 175 & 176 for my CCBY. Yes, I know Rose-ringed Parakeet isn't ABA-countable. . . . Other good birds seen at Sugden Regional Park this morning were Northern Waterthrush, Brown Thrasher, both Indigo & Painted Buntings and Pileated Woodpecker among others. Apparently, the Common Loon that was on Lake Avalon earlier in the week has flown the coop. I could not find a single Blue-gray Gnatcatcher nor an Eastern Phoebe so perhaps they have also moved on as well. Before I forget, I saw a Peregrine Falcon late yesterday afternoon soaring over Orange Blossom Rd. between Livingston Rd. & Airport-Pulling Rd in North Naples. It now looks like my jinx or nemesis birds for this winter on my CCBY are House Finch, King Rail, Sharp-shinned Hawk & Broad-winged Hawk. I'd ask that anyone seeing any of these birds in Collier County during the rest of this year to please notify me asap. I can provide my cell number on request. Thanks!
