The email address is not actually deleted. Rather, web browsers refuse to show it since it is enclosed in angle brackets (you can see it with view source). Basically, the angle brackets <> indicate html markup rather than text, and markup that doesn't make sense (like an email address) must be ignored by the web browser. In fact, I had to use some html trickery to get <angle brackets> to show in this post.
