Check the link "http://tropicalaudubon.org/tasboard/faq.html#image" that appears right below the Optional Image URL box (and which I entered into the Optional Link URL box for this message with "Click here for photo posting instructions" as the Link Title). If the Optional Image URL doesn't end with .jpg, .gif, or .png, it will not work.
Sites like Flickr normally give you a link to a webpage that, in turn, contains the photo. There is a way to get the direct link to the photo but, because I don't use Flickr, I don't know the specific steps to get it.
To get the photo displayed in this message I entered
"http://rschofield.smugmug.com/Nature/Everglades-Natl-Park-20110117/P1030183-Edit-copy/1162587590_fXw9B-M.jpg" into the Optional Image URL. (I actually copy&paste'd it from my online photo sharing site -- SmugMug.com) Notice that it ends with .jpg
It sounds more complicated than it really is.
