I just got back from a 3-day trip to the Dry Tortugas, I will be returning for another 18-days straight in three more days! We had a great trip with a good list of species seen, of course the highlights being an immature RED-FOOTED BOOBY and TWO BLACK NODDIES! Some other interesting new birds for my Dry Tortugas list were up to four Turkey Vultures and one Swallow-tailed Kite. We had 15 species of Warbler, 3- vireos an Upland Sandpiper and the usual assortment of other migrants. 90 species was the total for the trip.

Below you will find video grabs of the RED-FOOTED BOOBY as well as video grabs of “BOTH” BLACK NOODIES, I would not be surprised if there are more. Getting video footage is a real challenge in a 14-foot boat with 4 or 5 other passengers with the wind and the waves moving us all around. The photos below were taken through a scope while on this 14-foot boat, talk about tough photographing!

For any birders who would like to go to the Dry Tortugas I still have spaces available; this is the easiest and best way to see the RED-FOOTED BOOBY. During the last three days the booby seems to be there first thing in the morning and then it leaves to feed and then comes back about 4:00 p.m. or 5:00 p.m. The ferryboats get to Garden Key about 10:30 a.m. and leave by 3:00 p.m. so seeing the booby during that time may not be possible. The other fact is Long Key is about three quarters of a mile from Garden Key. If the booby does stay during the time the ferryboats are there the heat shimmer though a scope may make it impossible to see from Garden Key.

Call or e-mail me if anyone is interested I will be giving discounts on a 3-day trip with a portion of the proceeds go to Tropical Audubon Society in Miami. Remember to call me in the next three days, as I will be going back to the Dry Tortugas for the rest of my tours. You can still e-mail me or call after my three days at home and my wife will try and contact me between trips.

Current dates with spaces are:

April 14-17

April 20-23

May 2-6
