A bird consistent with Cuban Pewee was found by Dick Dean 215 yds south of the white gate on the Nature Trail at Bill Baggs SP Dick's attention was drawn to the bird by its "dee, dee dee" call. A mark has been made across the trail and the bird was observed feeding for about 10 minutes in tree tops about 10 yds to the west of the trail. The bird was 'scoped by five birders a little after 11:00. The bird had a bold white crescent behind its eye. It had short primaries and dingy yellow undersides. Sadly no-one had camera equipment so no photo was taken - obviously! A knee-cracking crippler of a bird. Thank you Dick!
It was great compensation for dipping on the La Sagra's Flycatcher yet again.
Also present over the white gate just before the Pewee was found was a light phase Short-tailed Hawk.
My chances of the La sagra's are looking very slim now as I am due to wend my weary way back to sun-drenched England on Tuesday.
Bob Foskett,
Eat, sleep, bird ... but not necessarily in that order.
