Unfortunately, none of your target species can be found in the Ft. Lauderdale area, so you and your father will have to travel some distance if you hope to see them. Four of your targets can be found in counties adjacent to Ft. Lauderdale. Barred Owl and Brown-headed Nuthatch can be found in Everglades National Park in Miami-Dade County. The closest Florida Scrub Jays can be found at Jupiter Ridge Natural area in Palm Beach County or Johnathan Dickinson State Park in Martin County. Bachman's Sparrow can also be found at that park.

For your other targets, you would need to travel even greater distances. For Red-cockaded Woodpecker, you would have to travel west to Babcock Webb WMA in Charlotte County, or north to Three Lakes WMA in Osceola County. The closest Red-headed Woodpeckers are along the Caloosahatchee River east of Ft. Myers in Lee County.
