A sometimes irruptive species, Pine Siskins are uncommon this far south in Florida and in my nearly 13 years of birding down here, I've only seen a few and never more than one at a time. So today, February 09, 2011, I couldn't believe my good fortune when my friend from Immokalee called to alert me to six(!) visiting her yard feeders. I rushed over there, almost running out of gas, to find and photograph these beautiful finches. Other birds coming to the feeders were White-winged & Mourning Doves, American Goldfinches, Painted & Indigo Buntings, Chipping Sparrows & Common Grackles. A Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Red-bellied woodpecker and Ruby-throated Hummingbird were also in the vicinity. The Pine Siskin was species #155 for my Collier County Big Year attempt. I'm still looking for "Collier County" Great Horned, Barn & Eastern-Screech Owls, Sharp-shinned & Broad-winged Hawks, Cedar Waxwing, Common Loon, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, American Wigeon, Northern Bobwhite, King Rail, Least Bittern, American Oystercatcher, Marbled Godwit, Lesser & Great Black-backed Gulls, Hairy Woodpecker, Sedge Wren, Yellow & Black-throated Green Warblers, Bronzed & Shiny Cowbirds and a few "expected" others plus anything really rare or uncommon. So if you happen to know where to find any of these birds in Collier County, please contact me asap! Thanks.

Photos of the Pine Siskins, a white morph Short-tailed hawk and a few others from today can be seen on my Facebook page here:
