The Refuge is preparing for Everglades Day this coming Saturday, February 12, 2011, sponsored by (among others) your friends at the Audubon Society of the Everglades. It is a free, all day, kid-friendly affair. For the entire schedule, see:

In doing so, they have pumped water into one of the containment areas that has attracted a bunch of ducks (mostly Blue-winged Teals), shore birds (Yellowlegs -- both Greater and Lesser, Least Sandpipers, and Wilson's Snipes), and the most Limpkins of the season. I should have posted a Limpkin photo as the bird-of-the-week shot but, instead, picked something else as you will see below. The Great Horned Owls are still present but we don't believe they have nested this season and, because it is so late in the season, probably won't this year.

This week's photo is of a Northern Cardinal. It is a gorgeous bird but poo-poo'ed by many because it is so common to most of us. The reason I picked it is because I wanted to include the enclosed link to photos (and text) of a Yellow Northern Cardinal that was recently posted -- I believe it was on BirdBrains (but the link is now gone) or it was, in fact, somewhere else -- I just wish I could give proper attribution to the original poster. In any case, this is not a joke. I hope those of you who did not see the other posting take the few moments to see an extraordinary bird!
