Yesterday, I birded at a number of locations in southern Palm Beach County. I began at daybreak in thick fog at Harold Campbell Day Use Area (STA 3/4, on Holey Land Road). Once the fog cleared, it turned into a beautiful morning. Birds seen included seven species of waterfowl (American Wigeon, Mottled Duck, Blue-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Green-winged Teal and Ring-necked Duck); other highlights included American Bittern, Roseate Spoonbill, Peregrine Falcon, Purple Swamphen, Black-necked Stilt, Long-billed Dowitcher, Wilson's Snipe and Caspian Tern.
After lunch in Belle Glade, I stopped briefly at several locations on my way back to Miami, including STA 1 West and East, Okeeheelee Nature Center, Wakodahatchee Wetlands and Green Cay Wetlands. At Okeeheelee, the immature Dickcissel appeared after about a 15 minute wait; this was Palm Beach County bird # 200 for me. Several Painted Buntings were also present at the feeder.
