What caught my eye are the well spaced rusty, horizontal bars you would see in adult or first year Broad-wingeds as opposed to the vertical, darker streaking of younger Red-shouldereds or the closely spaced barring of adult Red-shouldereds. Since it is a first year bird, the clean lower belly and vent look better for Broad-winged as well.
My guess is this bird is approaching adulthood. And hey, you saw the crescents, you are experienced, and saw the bird and I didn't.
