PB: Loxahatchee NWR weekly Wednesday birdwalk

There were lots of birders for today's walk -- 29 total -- and plenty of bird species to go around too -- 58 total. And just because we saw birds that might seem ordinary to some us, there were (at least) three life birds for some in the group: Limpkin, Snail Kite, and Pileated Woodpecker.

There was a nice selection of warblers in the live oaks near the observation platform (the one next to the road -- not the tower out on the trail) including today's photo of a Yellow-throated Warbler.

A small raptor perched on a small tree low to the ground demanded much discussion over whether it was a Merlin or a Kestrel. It was just far enough away, back lit, and facing directly at us that, even using a scope, we could not easily see the identifying field marks. We eventually identified it as a Kestrel because, in the end, we finally made out the double black stripes on the face.
