Here's the press release:

Everglades National Park has announced the re-opening of its popular Snake Bight Trail. The 3.2 mile round trip path enters another world as it travels through a tropical hardwood hammock. In season, there is an abundance of bird watching opportunities on the hike and from the boardwalk, at the end of the Trail, overlooking Florida Bay.

The Trail reopened March 19, 2004 after being closed for two winter seasons for rehabilitation work.

The new 160 foot long boardwalk and observation platform was replaced with recycled plastic-wood composite lumber and ammoniacal copper quat (ACQ) treated lumber. Both products are environmentally preferred to the use of standard CCA treated lumber, which contains arsenate.

Trees along the three mile trail were also trimmed to improve hiking and the project was completed at a total cost of $50,000 using park maintenance staff. Acting Superintendent Dan Kimball congratulated the staff for this labor intensive work and invites the public to return to this tranquil example of the original south Florida landscape.
