The mangrove squirrel has been photographed and the picture and sighting data turned over to the Research Center in the Everglades National Park.

It was seen in January, 2004, 1.1 miles northbound from the propane storage area just before you get to the Canal bridgeat Flamingo. It was previously seen one year earlier in the same place. The photographs were taken from a distance of 40 feet with a 10x digital camera. The picture quality is quite good.

The squirrel is now proven from both reliable sightings and photographs to be in residence in the Flamingo area.
