When I saw three Turkey Vultures land in my back yard this afternoon, I thought, "Oh, oh - what's dead? Maybe that Oppossum that spends every night walking all over my roof!"
After more careful observation, I saw that two of the vultures were just wandering around looking embarrassed for their companion, who was busily eating a ripe avocado. This was one of the avocados that occasionally fall from the top of my 40-ft tree, where I can't get at them. This particular avocado was very ripe, and the vulture soon had its bill and head coated with yellow-green ooze. It left in that condition, so if any of you think you saw a Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture plying the local skies, it ain't from Mexico, just Kendall.
