Early this Sunday morning I had the following noteworthy birds at the Belle Glade Marina in western Palm Beach County:
Yellow Warbler (2)
Yellow-throated Warbler (2)
Blue-headed Vireo (1)
(all seen in the trees at the parking lot for the campground "clubhouse")
On the paved loop trail around the pond starting at the same parking lot I added:
Painted Bunting (3)
Blue Grosbeak (3)
Indigo Bunting (15+)
Wilson's Snipe (1)
Purple Galinule (4)
I was not able to relocate the Dickcissel seen there earlier.
I then took CR 827 (west off SR27) hoping to find the family of Smooth-billed Anis that I had seen there a few months ago but was unsuccessful.
Good news from the Barn Owl spot at the intersection of CR 827 (west off SR27) and Miami Canal Rd: In the stand of champion red cedars were 2 Bald Eagles, 4 Crested Caracaras and - 2 Barn Owls.
A quick stop at John Stretch Park yielded a flock of about 25 Caspian Terns.
From there I headed over to Clewiston (Hendry County) and then south again on CR835 towards STA-5. On the stretch between Clewiston and STA-5, I saw a total of 7(!) Red-tailed Hawks, one of them likely being a Krider's. I've never seen that many Red-taileds south of Lake Okeechobee!
At STA-5, I walked straight off the end of Blumberg Rd. to the end of the first cells. This is also where I met up with Colin Gjervold. Here are our highlights:
Fulvous Whistling Duck (about 150)
Black Skimmer (around 50)
Stilt Sandpiper (25+)
Long-billed Dowitcher (many)
Black-necked Stilt (10)
We failed to produce a Ruff out of the 100s of Yellowlegs but I'm sure there is one out there. To get to STA-5, take CR835 south off Clewiston and turn left onto Blumberg Rd. where CR835 makes the second 90 degree right turn and follow the Blumberg Rd. south for about 10mi to the end.
