Manatees Seek Warmer Waters in Gables Canal

There were about 75 West Indian Manatees visible this morning in the canal by Coral Gables High School. All had left the open waters of Biscayne Bay to seek warmer temperatures inland. They were pretty immobile and didn't look too contented early this morning, but they became more active when the noonday sun hit the water.

Some people had dropped down to the water's edge and were trying to feed the manatees bread. It's important to remember that it is against the law to feed an endangered species, and it is generally harmful to the animals. One was chewing on an empty Starbuck's coffee cut, probably associating it with the handouts.
