I don't think it is a Sanderling. It noticeably stood out and was slightly larger with a shorter bill and dark brown breast band. Then again, it could be a weird abberation. I'm completely baffled. When I first saw it with its head tucked in, my first thought was Dunlin, until it pulled its head out and I got a better look at the plumage.
